As part of our constant efforts to provide a better platform experience to all our customers, we are making our Windows Shared Hosting Platform more stable and secure. One of the best ways we can do this is to stop supporting older versions of PHP that is no longer supported by the community. We have been doing a similar activity on our Linux Shared Hosting Platform for the past few months.
As part of this security effort, we have decided to stop supporting all the older PHP versions and upgrade them to version 7.3 or above. The older versions are PHP v5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2. These versions have shown the highest number of vulnerabilities and insecurities over the last few years. These versions of PHP have also stopped receiving support from the PHP community some time ago (PHP Unsupported Branches).
What needs to be done?
As announced earlier, we tried upgrading the PHP version to the latest version (7.3, 7.4) and found that some websites were not compatible with the new versions of PHP. To ensure that all websites smoothly get upgraded to the latest PHP versions, we request you to follow these steps to upgrade your site:
- Login to the Plesk Panel
- Navigate to Websites & Domains and then click on PHP Settings
- Select PHP version 7.3 or 7.4
- Click Apply
As the upgrade is a major version change, we strongly advise all our clients to ensure all custom written applications running on our servers are fully compatible with PHP 7.3 and above.
Kindly check with your in-house webmaster/outsource webmaster/programmer regarding this matter. For extra precaution, we strongly advise our customers to perform a BACKUP on their critical data.
When can you expect these changes?
In our previous announcement, we had called out the date of 10th April for this upgrade. However, we have extended this timeline by a few months, and we will begin this process on 25th September 2021.
Please note:
- Any website still running on the older PHP versions will not resolve correctly after 25th September 2021.
- Even if you create a new website on an older PHP version before 25th September, it will be upgraded to 7.3 or above after 25th September
