Google will be updating the Chrome web browser to Google Chrome 68 this July to explicitly flag websites that are secure and not secure. We’ve covered this in a blog post earlier but let’s take a deeper look.

How does this impact your business?

Web security has always been important and through the updated Chrome browser, Google aims to create a safer environment on the web. How? By flagging Not Secure websites. This could definitely have a negative impact on your business.

1. Customers will be weary about transacting on a website that’s unsafe. Google Chrome 68 will now flag websites as Not Secure if they’re not encrypted. With a Not Secure site, visitors, sales, sign ups, purchases and business could all drop.

2. Google will start prioritizing websites that are secure at the top of the search engine results page. Therefore, websites that are not secure will rank lower and your customers will have a hard time looking for your website.

How can you make your website secure?

Encryption. Encryption is a mathematical process of converting data into a code to prevent unauthorized access. The number of bits forms the size of the key. Bits can be 40-bit, 56-bit or 256-bit. The larger the bit, the stronger is the encryption.

A digital certificate like SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)  is a technology that establishes an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. With SSL, your website is secure as information is encrypted, preventing access to hackers. A digital certificate on a website activates a padlock and the HTTPS protocol which allows a secure connection from a web server to a browser. With an SSL certificate on your website, customers feel confident sharing personal data and making transactions.
